This tale was told to me about a woman that came to my theatre this weekend. Side note: I am in charge of marketing materials for my store. Posters, standees etc
So Me Before You came out this weekend. It's apparently a pretty good romance film. One controversial subject the film touches on is "the right to die" or assisted suicide.
I haven't seen it so I'm not sure how that all plays out. Well I guess the subject matter was a trigger for a woman who has had a family member attempt suicide.
When the movie ended she walked out of her theatre to complain about the movie's subject matter when she walked she walked right past a poster for Suicide Squad (character skulls) and lost
her shit. Now I am aware how serious a matter suicide is and would always be compassionate towards those affected BUT this lady was just downright bat shit crazy.
She accused our theatre of PROMOTING SUICIDE.
Based on showing a movie that approaches the issue and having a movie poster with the word "suicide" on it, we are advocating for people to kill themselves.
Our GM attempted to reason with this woman, trying to explain what Suicide Squad meant and how we don't actually make movies so therefore we couldn't possibly be promoting suicide.
She was having none of it. She demanded that we take the poster down because it was clearly a promotion telling people to off themselves.
I can understand her discomfort with the subject of suicide, but to blame us, like we have anything to do with these movies is ridiculous.
And on top of that she forced us to remove something that only she found offensive. Of course my GM obliged.
But when I got wind of it today, I put the Suicide Squad poster right back up (actual character poster). She said she was going to be back in a week and I can only hope I am working when she does.
I know I probably sound like an ass about the whole thing but I can't stand people constantly trying to force their safe spaces on me.
