So our theatre converted to digital in summer 2012. Built in the 1920s, it's a beautiful building and the owner (my boss) bought it because he appreciates places like it.
So of course, when we did the upgrade to digital and installed surround sound/new speakers, we kept all the old stuff.
Since announcing the upgrade, we had gotten a couple e-mails from someone saying that they were interested in/collected old sound systems and speakers and related items.
He wanted to see what we had so he could potentially buy it from us.
I forwarded these e-mails to my boss, but he sort of ignored them because he's not really in a rush to get rid of all this cool (albeit hardly functional) stuff from the 1950s/60s.
You'd think the guy would get the hint with us not responding (but yes, we should have at least told him sorry we aren't interested--but that was up to my boss, not me).
Anyway, so fast forward a couple months since this guy's last e-mail, and I'm working some random night. The movie ends and I go in to wait for everyone to leave so I can clean.
But while I'm in there at the back of our 500-seat theatre, I see a guy towards the front, moving closer and closer to one of the side corners--which is where the steps are to go up to the stage.
He starts walking up the steps. UM.
I yell out, "EXCUSE ME! YOU CAN'T GO BACK THERE!" And I keep an eye on him until I'm sure he won't keep walking towards the door to the stage.
He slowly makes his way away from the door and back up to the entrance/exit to the theatre, and meets up with a friend who's there with him. The two guys start talking to me...
"Oh, sorry, we just wanted to see if the old equipment is back there and what it's like up there. See, we collect sound systems and stuff.
Can someone bring us back there? Do you still have the old stuff?" (etc etc, I can't remember the exact conversation)
I basically mumbled yeah, we still have it, I think it's back there (it is) but it's dark up there and you'd have to climb over a bunch of crap to get to any of it (mostly true),
I can't just let you do that without talking to the boss, etc.
In my head I'm just thinking, HELL NO YOU CAN'T JUST GO UP THERE AND BROWSE AROUND OUR DARK STAGE, WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU.
Like what possesses a person to think he can just TAKE IT UPON HIMSELF to just go and do that, without talking to an employee first or thinking, "Hmm,
this could be a potential lawsuit for them if I go back there and get hurt because it's DARK and I could TRIP on something"?!
I deflected the situation by having my coworker give them one of our postcard things and writing the number for our voicemail on the back,
so they can leave a message asking the boss about coming in to check out our stuff. They left after that, thankfully.
I told my boss and he seriously considered calling them back just to say, "Maybe we would have let you come look around if you hadn't tried to DO IT WITHOUT ASKING first.
" Needless to say, they aren't getting a chance.
The one guy has asked me a couple times if the boss has said anything about it, and I've been deflecting since then, but if he asks again I'm just going to tell him sorry,
we aren't interested (plus you guys were entitled jerks)!
