“It was just for a second, Officer!” I cry, wringing my hands helplessly. “I swear- I just looked away for a second! And when I turned around-oh God- she was gone.
She’s GONE!” I sob hysterically.
I take a deep breath and look in the mirror. Not bad. My panicked expression was pretty convincing, and I really nailed the delivery of that last line this time. I think I’m ready.
Walking into Jill’s room, I find her busy hosting a tea party with her stuffed animals.
“Come on, Jilly-Bean!” I say with a smile. “Your parents wanted to make sure you got lots of fresh air today, so I thought we could do something fun!”
She squeals in excitement.
“How ‘bout a trip to the park?”
