Ear on the floor, eyes on the door.

The Ant

Ear on the floor,

Ear on the floor, eyes on the door.

One thump,

One thump, and a second too,

rattles, echos down,

the hallway,

the hallway, the room.

It whispers,

"The sugar, the sugar,

"The sugar, the sugar, where is the sugar?"

The sugar is not there.

Tipity-tap,

It hears a one, two, scratch.

Fool it, lure it,

get it back, the catch.

"Where is my sugar?"

"Where is my sugar?" It screeches, snaps.

Go back to then,

when the crickets,

still sang to them.

Quiet inside the shells,

of the past's wells.

The water drips,

as the clock ticks.

Tick-tock

The sun dips, swallows the light it makes.

And so the ant waits.
