Supposed to -- a short love poem

Supposed to

A love poem by adelinefecker

I was supposed to write you a love song

a fucking novel to express my love I was supposed to hold your hand, and make you laugh

I was supposed to kiss your lips

and look into your eyes unafraid I was supposed to be held by you

I was supposed to hold your fears

on my back and not crack from the weight I was supposed to help you

I was supposed to tell you I love you

But the words just wouldn’t come out I was supposed to make you feel safe

But I didn’t feel safe.

I was supposed to be proud to be yours

But also to keep it secret I was supposed to love only you

I was supposed to say yes always

And give you what you wanted I was supposed to be easy

I was supposed to tell you I miss you

But the keys wouldn’t go down I was supposed to make you feel safe

But I didn’t feel safe.

When my wife and I met, she was engaged. She was grudgingly planning to marry him. I was the wild barely civilized former soldier only months out of the jungle. We fell lustily, deeply, sensuously, rapturously, and ardently in love. We married three weeks after we met. Years later she told me that for the first time in her life, she felt safe when she was around me. That was 41 years ago. Your poem definitely struck a chord with me. I am sure every female who reads this will be able to relate.
