a poem about shadows

some days the shadow is so small, i forget it’s there but on other days, it becomes too large to bear

the shadow wraps around my mind and tightens it holds me like i hold my breath, my face whitens

it’s heavy, like a blanket under water, it pulls me deeper and deeper and deeper still until i’m face to face with the reaper

i try to breathe, count to ten, but the shadow darkens my mind all i see is black and grey and fire. i seek calmness but i can’t unwind

the shadow comes and goes whenever it wants, it controls me i have no will, it owns me. it goes by many names, but i know it as anxiety
