I could hear the cautious yet firm footsteps of the police on the pavement outside. I was terrified and sure that the rumbling noises my empty stomach was making would surely give me away. However, after what seemed ages, the footsteps faded away into the distance.
I was safe for the time being. My hunger had by now crossed all its limits, I had to put something in otherwise I would faint with the toxic smell of paints suffocating me.
I meekly peered out of the window to make sure that the street was deserted. It seemed to be. So I came out through the window and scanned my surroundings. All the shops were shuttered and deserted . Well, it wasn’t too surprising given that it was a market holiday. I spotted a closed tea shop at the end of the road and hurried towards it.
Behind the empty counter, were a few jars with some cookies left in them. My eyes gleamed at the sight. Snatching them up I gobbled up the cookies. Just then I heard a policeman cry out some distance away and next moment a bullet grazed past my ears and smashed the glass jar.
Now energized, I took to my heels and ran in a zigzag fashion to prevent them from taking a clear aim. I half ran, half tumbled through the narrow and winding lanes until again a hoard of policemen were chasing me down.
Realising that I wouldn't be able to keep the chase up for long, I doubled up sharply and acted as if making for the fork road, but instead hid under the counter of a dilapidated shop, praying for luck to favour me once more.
Within seconds all the cops were there on the fork road, on the other side of the counter under which I was concealed, questioning each other as to which road I had taken. But none of them seemed to have seen me, so I breathed a sigh of relief.
But they had a plan ready, two of them took guard there while two each went on the two different roads.
I was scared to even breathe, lest they should discover me. A couple of minutes later, one of them, a pompous guy, said to the other “ Are you sure that your intel is correct?” “Of course! Why do you ask” replied the other.
“Well nothing much, just my gut feeling that this guy is not a contract killer who has come to assassinate the mayor. He looks more like a regular job goer” “Oh come on! I have got credible info and the description exactly matches. Also didn't the description say that he disguises himself as a corporate guy? ” “Ya.. true...”
I listened to all this spell bound. “Umm… I’ll be back in a minute, nature’s call... ” said the pompous guy and excused himself. As soon as he was gone the other whisked out his phone and quickly dialled up someone.
“Hello, Yes Boss. Everything is going according to the plan.I have managed to get the top guys engaged in catching this guy whom they think to be an assassin. Time is ripe . You can get your brother out of the prison cell now. The guards on the gate are also on our team, he won't be stopped. ” I was dumbfounded...
