Walking to your doorstep home
The lazy London rain pouring
On all but our shivering bodies
Huddled next to you
Even if just for warmth
Close enough to hear your heart beat
Yet not enough to know what it wants.
The sound of your words echo slowly
Surrounded by a deafening silence
Where you keep all your answers
Hidden away from my never asked questions.
Unwilling to lose to the quiet no more
I search your eyes for courage
Knowing it's time to speak my truth
Words so used to remaining quiet
Leave my mouth with a bold stutter
As if having not practised the lines
A hundred times before.
Yet you don't do the same with yours
Seconds fill up the emptiness
Until they become an empty whole
The distance between us no longer finite
The warm rain no longer warm
As I begin to realise
That your silence will haunt me
For the days to come
More than anything you say.
