London bridge is falling down... Well. Not really. The london bridge is extremely stable, but theres a rumour behind that which may be all too real.
Back when the London Bridge was being built, it was believed these bridges needed a watchman. Otherwise it would collapse.
Of course, a man standing there wouldnt help if the bridge did fall. And thats because thats not what was meant by watchman.
It was believed that alot of the workers were very superstitious. One worker who did not believe in such things, was a beautiful woman named Tillie.
All the others called her My Fair Lady due to her beauty. Her son loved to watch the bridge being built everyday, pestering the workers to see if he could help.
Tillie would always shoo him away, saying that the others were very busy. The boy complied, sad that he wasnt able to help.
But one day, while his mother was taking her lunch, the foreman approached the lad. "Would you like to help? "
The boy was overjoyed at this. He followed the foreman and some workers to the bottom of the bridge. He explained that one of the workers dropped his tools in the leg of the bridge.
However, since it was almost complete, none of them could fit inside the space to get it.
The boy squeezed inside the foundation of the bridge to begin looking. No sooner than he did however, did the gap behind him begin to get smaller.
By the time the boy realized he was being sealed in by the workers, it was too late.
Tillie, back from her lunch, searched everywhere for her child. Noone had seen him it seemed. Until a grief stricken worker pulled her to the side. "I didnt want to do it....
The foreman threatened my family! " Tillie, as confused as ever, asked him to explain.
As she listened to the fate of her son, she was overcome with depression. Sobbing, she climbed to the top of the bridge, and jumped into the water below.
The worker later hung himself from the bridge, unable to cope with what he had done.
The child was sacrificed to the bridge, so that his soul would guard it, preventing it from collapsing. And a childrens song was formed.
Some say if the bridge ever DOES fall, all you need to do is chant "My fair lady", and she will know her son is now free.
