In 2006, John Green released An Abundance of Katherines—a young adult novel that follows Colin Singleton, a prodigy who only dates girls who are named Katherine. Complex equations play a huge role in its story, so Green asked his mathematician friend Daniel Biss to an appendix to explain them.

Don’t you find it fascinating how Green was able to incorporate math in his novel?

As a writer, you’ve probably never imagined math and creative writing going together but, believe it or not, they actually do. In fact, authors have been incorporating math into their stories for centuries now and labeling them as mathematical fiction —a genre in which mathematics and mathematicians play important roles.

If you are now interested in writing short stories and novels inspired by math, here are writing prompts you might find helpful:

  • Prompts are a great way to start a story. Another approach to teaching the mathematical uses of narrative is to go through literature and do direct analysis or retellings of the work in order to make it easier for the student to create their own work. A work of literature can be chosen based on mathematics they can use to center their story upon such as themes, novel applications of math, and characters. This virtually cuts down the process of imaginative works to connect with algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and applied science. Variations like using  storyboard art of simple scenes drawn by the students can be a great analytic approach to help the student work out their ideas. Then once the work is complete it requires peer review.
