Romance is considered one of the most popular genres in the publishing industry because of its huge following. Moreover, readers love stories about people falling in love and living happily ever after because they make them feel warm and happy. Moreover, they are also easy to read and do not take up a lot of brainpower or time to enjoy. 

With so many stories under this genre, you may feel like it is hard to think of new ideas and plots.  

Enter writing prompts. 

Really good writing prompts can do wonders for your writing career. They can stir your creative juices until you can come up with a unique storyline. What’s more, they can also force you to expand your scope and help you break through writer’s block.    

To help you brainstorm for ideas, here are romance writing prompts that could inspire you: 

• Your character falls for their celebrity crush, but there is a reason they are never together in the first place.
• The Olympics are your universe and the only reason both of you don’t disappear into a wormhole is your solid relationship.
• You’re having a picnic in the park when you run into your most hated enemy. You spend the day playing games that you never used to think were fun.
• You’re having a completely random conversation when out of the blue, your partner proposes.  Stop everything you’re doing. Write down your partner’s favorite memory. What’s your favorite story time? What did you do the night you met your partner? Write about what your partner did for your birthday. If you were going away to college, what would your partner do to keep you company? Write about a failed selfless act. Write about a time your partner did something without asking, and it made you happy. Your partner packs you lunch for a day of cramming. What’s in your lunch? Write about your partner’s habits. Correct your partner’s grammar. Write a note to throw in your partner’s bookbag. What would be on your playlist for your soul mate? What shows up on your doorstep one day? Write about your partner losing his/her temper. Write about a time your partner refused to share something. Write about a secret your partner has. What did you do the day your partner lost his/her job? Write about a time your partner took credit for your idea.
• Maybe you should have gone with him? You will spend the rest of your night wandering looking for the place you are supposed to be.
• 4. Have the characters gotten into a relationship before? Was there drama and hardships along the way? Or is the relationship smoother sailing? How long have they been partnered? Depending on the length of the story, it might also be interesting to note whether or not the couple is monogamous.
• You only think of 3 words, but try to express all about how you are feeling in a long story, or short story.
• You wish there was a way to capture certain moments forever. What secret had your partner discovered? Someone is trying to sabotage your plans to elope.
• You discover that you’ve been living under the same roof with a stranger who is actually a really good person.
• You lock yourself in the car you paid for, and your partner’s in charge of the key. You have to listen to them tell you they love you for how many hours.
• You accidentally kiss someone of the same gender or orientation before realizing that your partner is watching.
• There are lots of romances that out-and-out end badly. But what of the ones that don’t? This one is my own fic, called How Did We End Up Here?.
• When the kingdom suddenly finds out that you are in love with the prince, something wonderful happens.
• Your fondest childhood memory of your grandfather revolves around one of his very strange hobbies.
• Movies are usually not the best source for writing prompts as they’re often too over the top or use tropes and cliches. However, your book will probably have to have a movie theme so some of this stuff will fit in nicely.
• Your partner impresses you by surprising you with something they remember you saying you always wanted.
• You are offered the opportunity to go on a dream vacation, however, you must find someone to take care of your pet while you’re gone.
• You hate your teacher more than anything else in the world. One day she suggests you date so you can learn to deal with the feelings you have for her.
• It is up to you to take these prompts and wow the judges with your entry into the contest! Words are your tool and mean the difference between first place and no place! Best of luck and happy writing!
• Your partner brings their dead ex-lover to a dinner with the whole family and you have to be hospitable.
• You meet someone on your way home. You don’t know where you’re going, but you are extremely happy to be there.
• It makes you have a day of second thought about everything and you’re going to have to let it go because it was just so great.
• You go on a first date with a person whom you believe has many physical traits that you always wanted. After your date, though, you find out that your new love has the trait you despise the most.
• You’re invited to a party where everyone converse in a different language. Once a year you meet up with your rival gang.
• You broke up with your significant other, but after a while you realise that you miss them terribly and want to fix things.
• Your partner takes you on a blind date and you fall head over heels at first sight and at first date.
• You date someone who speaks a different language, but whenever you communicate with each other it turns into a new experience.
• You thought it was going to be a normal flight but a terrible storm threatens to take down your plane.
• Someone is in love with a work of art. When the art is ruined pieces start being stolen to fix the damage.
• You visit a castle and after admiring the architecture, you notice a door. You open the door and step into a ghostly room, a scene of the past unfolds.
• Your partner is sad because their family is on the other side of the country, or even across the country, or all the way in a different country.
• It’s been months since you really spoke. You feel like you didn’t even know him. As you enter his childhood home, you see the place has been re-designed into a manga cafe. Will you save the relationship or will you even want to after you confront your partner’s true self?

• It’s the beginning of the new year. It’s your first day of work and your boss is the most attractive man/woman you’ve ever seen.
• You’re out exploring a long lost city when you discover a door slightly ajar. You peek through it to see what’s on the other side.
• You gaze into each other’s eyes and realize that you aren’t actually interested in your partner’s appearance.
• You thought your mate put you off vampires, until they turned on you for food during your wedding ceremony.
• Men and women have separate bathroom hours for intimacy on the first day that building the Beyond becomes available.
• You’ve been dreading your twenty-fifth high school reunion because you’re too afraid of what others will think of your failures to go. However, on the day of the reunion, a mysterious cab with fairies inside of it conveniently shows up to take you away from your reunion and lead you to none other than your soulmate.
• The person you work with has been crushing on you for a while, but never told you how they felt until one day they tell you.
• If you had to move to another state, you versus if a family member had to move to another state, which would you rather?
• An arranged marriage requires one of the partners to remain celibate while the marriage is being arranged. The one not on the celibate requirement has a string of one night stands and is also being presented as a single person. One of the one night stands alters the route for the couple as they are going to point B. Upon blissful discovery, they keep the relationship rather than go through whatever would have happened otherwise.
• You are trapped in your office. At night. Locked in. There is only one elevator. Only one of you can use it so it’ll be bad if you misuse your time and it gets stuck with just the one of you in it.
• Someone from work keeps the fact that they are dating someone a secret and you find out at a potluck dinner.
• You’re a trust fund kid with inheritance to inherit, and your future husband works at a fast food/retail.
• Your partner agrees to see a social worker, or therapist, or goes off their medication because they’re getting tired of the petty arguments.
• You meet someone that is like the opposite of what you would usually go for. Still they manage to pique your interest.
• Life was never easy for both of you and in the days to come, the decisions you make will test your courage.
• You help a local celebrity land a major role on a show, and he or she is deeply grateful to you for it.
• Your characters meet when one is a telephone operator and the other is the “oddest” customer they’ve had.
• You have a huge argument with your love interest, but ten years later you find a love note tucked away with something important.
• An amateur astronomer meets a pharmaceutical researcher when the moon hits their eye like a big pizza pie, that makes them go Aww!
• You’re not out yet to your partner. You’re not even sure you are straight. The only words said are the words that come out of your mouth when you say “I do”.
• You take a train excursion through the wetland with your mother to find a riverboat captain she used to date.
• You are a bookstore manager and have to romance one of your clients who has never read a book in his life.
• You’re new to town so you have no idea how to meet anyone but an interesting person strikes up a conversation with you and it turns into a hot date.
• A person in the mafia falls for the daughter of someone people in the mafia aren’t supposed to fall for.
• Two childhood friends who can seemingly hear each other’s thoughts, fall in love. You both know it, but when you get together it becomes too much to handle, leaving a climax.
• You meet your casual hook-up in another context for the first time. Your hook-up’s new partner is present.

• Someone who lacks self-worth or is depressed has their soulmate enter their life and forms a long lasting bond of love with them.

• Make a list of funny or annoying dates you’ve been on, or ones you would like to go on. Have your partner do the same.
• You are being forced to move to another country along with most of your family, can you and your partner stay together? Or will you call it quits or start a long distance relationship?
• A lighthouse keeper whose goal in life is to reach the end of the world has a chance meeting with a sailor.
• While on a business trip, you meet the most interesting and attractive person you’ve ever met. You go out constantly and get to know each other quite well during the trip.
• What if your non-romantic partner was leaving messages hidden in plain sight across your relationship?
• After dying and being brought back to life you awake to find you have acquired some sort of power of your own.

• A browsing ghost is a witness to a very particular and specific fight. As he witnesses the events unfold, the reader gets to know very personal details about the people in the story.
• You just asked Vanessa for a magical book that will make your one true love appear on it, but you have to kiss a girl to get it.
• You’re scanning the crowd to find your love, thinking that if they aren’t here yet there’s no point in coming, then you look around to find them.
• Someone realizes how much they love their friend when their friend moves away, but he/she finds the perfect way to tell them/show how much they care.
• You had considered yourself a new non-religious person, but your partner takes you to church on Christmas to celebrate the holiday with their family.
• You plan to work forever at the same job, but your long lost love shows up at work the morning before your planned wedding day.
• Have some fun with your description and have your characters do something completely unexpected, or find a location you haven’t seen in a romance novel before.
• It’s Christmas Eve and you just start to believe in the magic of Santa Claus again as you see the gift he left under the tree for you.
• On your 50th wedding anniversary, all the people who have attended your wedding ceremonies over the years attend your wedding ceremony.
• You know your best friend is in love with you, but you play it off like they’re just being a friend.
• You’re participating in an online game that expands your world, when you decide to step outside reality and add your partner as your avatar character.
