Summer plays a huge part in literature. In fact, people have been writing stories set about this time of the year for centuries now.

One of the most notable stories set in the summer is William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The play, which first premiered in the 1500s, consists of several subplots that revolve around the marriage of Theseus and Hippolyta, with the story about four Athenian lovers as the most popular one. Another is Mariko Tamaki’s This One Summer. It is a coming-of-age graphic novel about two teenage friends as they discover themselves and their sexuality while battling family dynamics and mental disabilities.

Below is a collection of writing prompts to try this summer. You can use them as inspiration for your next short story or novel.
