Do you ever write something and think "I probably won't ever share this bc it's too personal." Then months/years later when you come back to it after growing & healing, the feelings/memories surrounding the poem no longer have that much (if any) power over you and it doesn't seem like such a big deal to share it anymore??? Bc same.

What is a body

What is a body Except a thing given,

What is a body Except a thing given, A protecting thing,

What is a body Except a thing given, A protecting thing, And a thing that can be taken.

What is a body Except a thing given, A protecting thing, And a thing that can be taken. Once a body becomes A thing taken It becomes that much harder To love

Like trying to love A child that is not yours As if they were your own

Like trying to love A child that is not yours As if they were your own This is not an impossible feat

Like trying to love A child that is not yours As if they were your own This is not an impossible feat But it certainly is difficult

My body, Once a protecting thing,

My body, Once a protecting thing, Became akin to an inescapable prison

My body, Once a protecting thing, Became akin to an inescapable prison How could I love this thing

My body, Once a protecting thing, Became akin to an inescapable prison How could I love this thing When it earned me a seemingly life sentence Of unwanted touch, words, and stares?

Thoughts of breaking free

Thoughts of breaking free Cutting my way out or Burning this place down Tried to consume me, but

Thoughts of breaking free Cutting my way out or Burning this place down Tried to consume me, but This escape plan was flawed:

Thoughts of breaking free Cutting my way out or Burning this place down Tried to consume me, but This escape plan was flawed: There would be no escape

Thoughts of breaking free Cutting my way out or Burning this place down Tried to consume me, but This escape plan was flawed: There would be no escape Only spilled blood and more scars

My body, said to be a gift from God,

My body, said to be a gift from God, A treasure to be treasured Following precise instructions

My body, said to be a gift from God, A treasure to be treasured Following precise instructions It was to be covered in a particular way,

My body, said to be a gift from God, A treasure to be treasured Following precise instructions It was to be covered in a particular way, Fed certain things,

My body, said to be a gift from God, A treasure to be treasured Following precise instructions It was to be covered in a particular way, Fed certain things, Subject to some exercise.

I was to be responsible with it

I was to be responsible with it But he wasn't responsible with me

I was to be responsible with it But he wasn't responsible with me I felt used

I was to be responsible with it But he wasn't responsible with me I felt used And I always liked my things new

I was to be responsible with it But he wasn't responsible with me I felt used And I always liked my things new

It took what felt like a lifetime To find value in this body again

But finder's keeper's -

But finder's keeper's - This valuable thing is mine forever

But finder's keeper's - This valuable thing is mine forever What is a body

But finder's keeper's - This valuable thing is mine forever What is a body If not your own

~~~ As always, thanks for reading! Continue to the next slide for some thoughts I had while I read this again poem for the first time since writing it a few months ago:
It's funny how the past has a way of affecting the present if not dealt with. I spent some time this year falling back in love with my body with the help of another person. Now that I've found that self-value again, I don't think I'm ever letting it go.
A wish I have for all of you is for you to learn to love every aspect of yourself so strongly that no one is ever able to take that away from you🧡 I said this the last time I posted but hopefully since 2020 is right around the corner I can stick to my word and post more frequently ahaha. Until next time!✌🏾
