"Thank you for shopping with us."
I gave a polite nod of my head to the cashier, too embarrassed to respond to them directly.
Even though I've done this several times, I still haven't gotten used to it.
But I managed to do it anyway, and to the victor go the spoils: the newest edition of Ninjas of Love was mine! I clutched the bag it was in close as I giggled to myself.
On my way home, however, I met an unfortunate snag in my plans.
"Whatcha got there, Blake?" Ruby popped up out of nowhere, instantly curious of what I was carrying.
In my panic, I stuttered as I responded. "N-Nothing! Just a book I need to read for... extra credit!"
"Really? Let me see!"
"NO!" I shouted randomly. "It's a... secret project. No one is supposed to know."
"Come on, your secret's safe with me!" Like I expected, she was awfully persistent, and very touchy as well.
She started reaching for the bag, trying to coax it out of my arms.
It made me accidentally lose my grip, causing the bag to drop to the ground, the book slipping out as well.
In a panic, I tried to pick it up, but Ruby managed to reach it first.
"Ninjas of Love?" She read the title aloud.
That's it. I'm done for. My life's over.
"You read this too? Wow, I never would have guessed!"
"Huh? Too? You mean you read Ninjas of Love?"
"Yeah, I always thought you would have made fun of me if you knew, since you seem to read such serious books."
"Well I thought you'd make fun of me if you ever figured out."
Somehow, unexpectedly, I made a reading buddy that day.
I guess you'll never find anyone to talk about your hobbies with if you're too ashamed to share them.
