Genkan​: are traditional Japanese entryway areas for a house, apartment, or building—something of a combination of a porch and a doormat. The primary function of genkan is for the removal of shoes before entering the main part of the house or building. Genkan are often recessed into the floor.

Mei went to her room and put her bag down. Her notes and books slid out, and a big smile spread across her face at the thought of never having to look at them again. She put them in a box and stored them away in her cupboard.
