Alright, time to raise awareness about this. I feel like nobody knows this is happening or they forget it's a possibility. Emotional, physical, and sexual abuse can come from sports.
Whether it's the coaches, associates, or athletes doing the abusing. It's a thing.
It's not okay. It's not normal. Parents, if you see your child or anyone else's child continuously sobbing at practices please don't think that's normal. It's not.
Examples of abuse include:
failing to ensure children are safe
exposing children to undue cold, heat or extreme weather conditions without ensuring adequate clothing or hydration
exposing children to unnecessary risk of injury by ignoring safe practice guidelines
failing to ensure the use of safety equipment
requiring young people to participate when injured or unwell
if the nature and intensity of training or competition exceeds the capacity of the child's immature growing body
where coaches encourage the use of drugs or harmful substances to enhance performance or delay puberty
if athletes are required to participate when injured
if the sanctions used by coaches involve inflicting pain
criticism, sarcasm, name-calling or racism
a child is ignored or excluded
children feel pressure to perform to unrealistically high expectations
children are made to feel like their value or worth is dependent on their sporting success
Please I swear to god. Reach out to someone if you feel like there's abuse going on in your own or someone else's athletic life.
Even if the abuser isn't formally punished they will be fired from their job or given significantly less power within their job.
If you live in the US call 911 if you're in a life threatening situation. Use the number (720) 531-0340 to report sexual or any other type of abuse in a sports environment.
