One of those stories about a boy on the ace spectrum.

A Cowardly Weasel

"You're just avoiding me at this point."

Jacen looks at her eyebrows. They've always been perfect. Sculpted, sharp, and out of this world. He knows that she told him they're filled in but still... he's never seen eyebrows so perfect.

It's probably weird to obsess over eyebrows-- especially as a boy-- but he could probably obsess over every part of Hemba for the rest of his life.

"Jacen," she spits out his name like shards of glass. Why there would be glass in her mouth in the first place is beyond him.

Why even put it in your mouth when you know for a fact it's gonna hurt you? Curiosity or addiction most likely. Or self-hatred.

"Yes?"

"I've been trying to talk to you all week." Yes. She has. And Jacen has been ducking out of her eyesight all week. It's a very mutual hand-in-hand experience.

"No idea what you're talking about," He tilts his head at her.

"Bullshit." It is very much bullshit. They both know it.

He hums in lieu of a response.

"You don't get to just run away from this conversation. It's not fair!"

"It's my conversation so I can do anything I want with it. Specifically not have it."

"You're a coward, you know that?"

"Yep."

"A coward and a weasel."

"It's the red hair, ain't it?"

"A coward, weasel, and liar."

He stalls himself from giving another quip. He feels his whole body tighten and lock-up. "Liar?"

"Jacen, you're a horrible liar. You told me you loved me back."

He did tell her that, didn't he? It's just... he loves her. He does. But not like that. And that scares him. He doesn't want to be broken.

If he just tries to play along maybe it'll fix him (he knows it won't). "I'm sorry," he whispers.

"Can I ask you something?"

Jacen swallows down the lump in his throat. He doesn't know if he'll have an answer.

"Are you gay?"

He really does not have an answer for that one. If he were texting her this is a moment where he'd leave her on read. Is he gay? Is he fucking gay?

"I'm not gay." It feels like a bit of a half-lie.

"So you really just don't like me then?"

"I'm sorry."

Hemba just shakes her head with this sad sort of smile. "Goodbye Jacen." She kisses him on the cheek and leaves the room. Even something as small as that makes him want to vomit.

He just wishes he was normal.
