I am paper. A flowing piece of looseleaf, floating in the wind.

I Am Paper

I am paper.

A flowing piece of looseleaf, floating in the wind.

I know you,

And you know me.

That's what I'd like to believe.

However, we both know that isn't true.

I've kept secrets from you.

You've kept secrets from me.

We try too hard to protect each other,

But I'm already crumbled.

Grabbed one too many times out of the wind,

Wishing you'd just let me float away.

I want to protect you from my demons,

And so I pretend they don't exist.

And so I pretend they don't exist. You do the same thing.

I know so much,

Found so many of your secrets.

Words are written on me,

Paper cutting the hands of people that care.

It seems no one can get away unscathed.

I am better at hiding things than you are.

I was smarter than you thought.

Still, I will not reveal your secrets.

I trust you,

And you trust me.

That's what I'd like to believe.

However, crumbled paper can never be the same as it was.

No matter how many times you flatten it,

The creases still exist.

Still, I love you.

I know that you'd do anything for me,

That you'd climb any mountain if I needed you to.

You'd walk through a fire to save this piece of paper from burning,

You'd chase the wind forever trying to catch me.

So, thank you for caring for me,

And thank you for loving me unconditionally.

Neither of us is perfect,

But that's okay.

I am paper,

And you are as well.

This, I truly believe.
