~ H I S T O R Y ~ A tribute to Maya Angelou! Her poems always grab me from the very beginning, hence I made the connection "history." (Some fine print: the first stanza presented was from "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou, not mine!)

Still I Write

You may write me down in history

You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies,

You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt

You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise.

You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise. – "Still I Rise" Maya Angelou

Will you only see my truth worth

Will you only see my truth worth After dirt has hugged me cold?

Will you only see my truth worth After dirt has hugged me cold? My name engraved on stone and wood,

Will you only see my truth worth After dirt has hugged me cold? My name engraved on stone and wood, A tombstone saying "she's gold"?

I don't want you remembering

I don't want you remembering Only the good times we have had.

I don't want you remembering Only the good times we have had. I want you here with me right now

I don't want you remembering Only the good times we have had. I want you here with me right now To see me as I am.

Perhaps you'll only hear of me

Perhaps you'll only hear of me When my words have bled to ink,

Perhaps you'll only hear of me When my words have bled to ink, A poet lost to the mercy of time,

Perhaps you'll only hear of me When my words have bled to ink, A poet lost to the mercy of time, Another poem you must annotate.
