I’m turning some anecdotes and memories I’ve been told by family members into little stories and adding my own spices of fiction.

Feverish and cold and tired. Exhausted. When was this going to end? She had to keep doing so many things, staying in bed was not a habit of hers. Being sick either. But it happened, a harsh cold and in bed for a few days.

Lots of medicinal herb infusions. There were no pills yet, no shots in the doctor to accelerate it and let it go quicker. Living in the country, in a poor city, in a not so well developed country and with the meanest godmother the life could give her, was truly not easy.

So adding this cold to the situation felt just very, very bitter, missing even those really tiny pleasures she got to have daily, like being able to appreciate the warm smell of bread just baked or the freshest air from the ocean brought to her from the nearby port...

...or just wanting to eat what the sea could give them, or simply being able to look at it from afar and inhale the breeze to be, if even just a tiny bit, invigorated by it, to keep going, to keep putting up with this kind of life.

Her godfather was better though, he was more affectionate and considerate, so he brought her a bit of ocean for her cold. After fishing he asked the ocean for permission once more and with a jar he took some water home.

At home she received the jar with ocean water and some lemon juice, and was ordered to drink it. Her godmother kept being the worst but at least she could put up with her without a cold.
