I put my coat on and bent down to help Kristopher with his. He squirmed as I buttoned up his coat. I let him go and ran to join his sister outside.
My husband, Alex, came inside as he ran out. "You ready?" He smiled at me. I couldn't manage to smile back.
"No," I told him, tears forming in my eyes. "But I need to do this." A single tear rolled down my cheek slowly. I wiped it away and sighed.
"Get them buckled in. I'll be out in a minute." Alex walked out the front door and I turned to stare at the last place my father had ever been: his favourite chair.
It had always rested in the back room, which overlooked the backyard. The backyard was very small because when I was born, Nick had already moved out to be with his girlfriend.
Nick, my brother, had wanted to be in the military. I had no idea where he was at that moment in time. "They're buckled." He paused. "Come on, honey." He walked up to me, grabbed my waist, and turned me towards the front door.
I squirmed as Alex put me down on the front porch. I stood on my tiptoes, trying to reach his lips. He picked me up and kissed me. "I love you so much." He whispered.
"I love you..." I leaned into him, holding onto his neck. "GROSS!!!" Lucille screamed from the back seat of the car. I turned towards her and ran to the car. I opened the passenger door and sat in the car.
Alex walked around to the other side of the car and sat in the driver's seat. He started the car and drove on the right side of the road. I looked behind me at the house and smiled faintly, remembering all the memories I had in that house.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'll make a part two to this! This is about my OC's journey through her life as an adult, starting with her father's death. Thank you all for reading and I hope you have a great day, even if you haven't been having a good day. Or night. Whatever it is.
