They were together for a short time. She would take his hands and splay his fingers over her cheeks. She’d kiss each and every fingertip and then cup them and hold them close to her heart.
Her tears fell off her eyelashes, shimmering like a glistening moon being reflected off of shore waters. They trailed over his rough hands. He caught them and held her tears to his brow.
He wiped her cheek with his thumb and drew her to him, firmly pressing her to his chest.
She raised her head to look at him but could only blink as her vision of him blurred. He would tuck stray wisps of her hair behind her ear and validate her.
“It will be alright.”
His voice was deep, but it trembled as he tried to reassure her. Inside she sobbed.
It was going to be okay, but it was also never going to be the same again.
