As most everyone knows by now, beloved comic book creator/legend Stan Lee recently passed away at the age of 95.
There have been, of course, many words both spoken and written on Lee's passing and on his contribution to pop culture in general.
But without a doubt the most controversial words about Stan's passing came from comedian/talk show host Bill Maher.
Maher wrote a blog post wherein he decried not only Stan Lee's said "contribution" to so-called pop culture but of adults who still read comic books whom he said were once strictly for kids, suggesting how adults should read adult books WITHOUT the pictures.
Never mind the fact that there have been comic books based on classic literature like Moby Dick AND there have been books about superheroes WITHOUT the pictures but I digress!
They've even put out comics based on the BIBLE, which is, of course, one of the most ADULT & best-selling books in history. (But, then again, Bill Maher IS a "proud" atheist, so he probably MISSED that one!)
This, of course, isn't the FIRST time Maher has mocked the passing of a beloved celebrity; like, for instance, he poked fun at Steve "Crocodile Hunter" Irwin after his sudden death when he was stabbed in the chest by a stingray.
Bill came to the Halloween party at-where else!-the Playboy Mansion dressed as Irwin with a bloody stingray barb sticking out of his chest. (Nice, Bill!)
Of course, some would argue that dressing up in a costume for Halloween is FOR KIDS but I digress!
Going back to what Bill said about Stan, perhaps the most baffling thing he wrote about Lee and comic books was this: “Donald Trump could only get elected in a country that thinks comic books are important.”
Uh, I can't say for sure, but I doubt VERY seriously Trump is what one would call a comic book connoisseur. I'd say the same goes for many-or most-of his "followers" (though, again, I can't say for sure).
Besides, anyone who still reads ultra-PC Marvel comcs today knows that about 99.9 1/2 % of those who work for them are NOT Trump supporters. In fact, there was even a supervillain "inspired" by Trump.
Anyway, Bill's complaining about adults reading comics is nothing new. And I myself tend to get tired of how about three-fourths of the "entertainment" released & consumed in this country are based on-that's right!-comic books.
I mean, where's John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and Charles Bronson when you need them! (Oh, wait a sec . . .)
Anyway, my view on what Bill Maher said about Stan Lee and his fans, adult or otherwise, made me think the following:
If your own "contribution" to so-called pop culture includes the flick Cannibal Women In The Avocado Jungle Of Death, then maybe-just maybe!-you should STFU about another's OWN "contribution" to said pop culture.
Besides, if Bill Maher has an aversion to adults reading comic books, why then DID he have a cameo in the COMIC BOOK flick Iron Man 3? (Well, Bill?)
On a more serious note, another thing that struck me about what Bill Maher said about Stan Lee and his "adult" fans was how he once (or twice) DEFENDED female teachers who get arrested for molesting their students.
For instance, in his Playboy Interview some years back, he spoke about the case involving Florida schoolteacher Debra LaFave who pled GUILTY to sexually assaulting a 14-year-old student, saying how the REAL crime was that we DIDN'T have said sexual assault on tape.
Which is rather interesting considering how if Bill or anyone else did indeed possess such a tape they would be guilty of possessing CHILD PORN. (Just saying, Bill!)
So, in other words, Bill Maher has a "problem" with adults reading comic books because he says they're just for kids but, by his OWN admission, he apparently DOESN'T have a problem with ADULT female teachers diddling their KID students. Makes PERFECT sense, Bill!
Again, just saying, Bill!
Oh yeah, while Bill Maher claims to be SO much more "highbrow" than adults who read "kiddie" comic books, he once appeared in-where else!-Playboy licking chocolate syrup off "performance artist" Karen Finley.
I can't say I remember seeing anything like THAT in the comics I read as a kid, although I did read an issue of Iron Man where Tony Stark goes to the Playboy Club, bunnies and all!
Hey, it WAS the seventies, after all! (Yep, I'm THAT old!)
And let's NOT forget Stan Lee's ADULT cartoon Stripperella (voiced by-who else!-Baywatch "actress"/noted sex kitten Pamela Anderson)!
R.I.P, Stan Lee! (In spite of what Bill "Cannibal Women" Maher says!)
