My Review Of "Golden Shower Of Hits" by The Circle Jerks

"Golden Shower Of Hits" is the third album by noted punk rock group the Circle Jerks which was released back in 1983.

I bought the album-or rather the cassette (does anyone remember those?)-at a local record store a few years after the album came out.

It probably goes without saying I bought the album-or cassette-because I thought the title and the name of the band were both funny as hell!

BTW, this was also the primary reason why I picked up the album-or, there again, cassette-"Frankenchrist" by the Dead Kennedys.

Anyway, when I listened to the album (or cassette), I thought it sounded like typical punk rock. I also thought the Circle Jerks weren't the worst nor the best punk band I'd ever listened to.

I mean, they were no Dead Kennedys or the Sex Pistols!

Most of the songs on the album-as with pretty much all of their other songs-barely lasted two minutes long save for the hilarious title track which was a little over five minutes long.

They were kind of like the Ramones in that regard (whom I also was a way bigger fan of).

My two favorite songs off the album are "When The Shit Hits The Fan"-which was featured in the movie Repo Man starring Emilio Estevez (who is Charlie Sheen's brother)-and, again, the hilariouos-as-hell title track.

The title track is a medley of a half-dozen classic songs such as "Having My Baby", "Love Will Keep Us Together" & the song "Afternoon Delight"-which is an ode to a quickie-all played in punk rock style.

I tell you, you haven't lived until you've heard the punk rock version of country legend the late Tammy Wynette's song "DIVORCE" performed by the Circle Jerks (with some of the lyrics "reworked" by the band).

I know the Circle Jerks-who were originally called the Bedwetters-would not be everyone's cup of tea (along with punk rock in general).

But I think their song "Golden Shower Of Hits" would at least be worth a listen just for shits & giggles!

And, if you want to listen to some really good punk albums, might I suggest the aforesaid "Frankenchrist", "Never Mind The Bollocks Here's The Sex Pistols" and "Beelzebubba" by the Dead Milkmen (which has their "classic" song "Life Is Shit").

And, oh yeah, pretty much any album by the aforementioned Ramones. (R.I.P., guys!)

Enjoy!
