Founder of The Hustle (http://thehustle.co/)
How did you get into entrepreneurship?
I used to work for this guy who was on the TV show American Pickers. First entrepreneur I met & saw he got to be his own boss. I kept getting fired from jobs so started a hot dog stand in college
Why did you start The Hustle?
My co-founder & I sold a company & decided to do Hustle Con as a fun project. Ended up being quite profitable. We realized that there's a lot of content out there, but not a lot of quality.
Why do people like your content better?
There is a ton of shit out there. Forbes, Inc, Entrepreneur. The content is really bad. We made fun of them. We made fun of ourselves. It was relatable. The bar is really low in this game.
What advice would you give founders of content startups?
Learn how to write good copy. Read "Advertising Secrets of the Written Word" by Joseph Sugarman. Writing good email is very important.
Most important lessons about hustling?
Put in long hours. Do research & study history. Find what works and copy that. Steal all the good parts of everybody.
Vision for The Hustle?
We want to be the younger version of the Wall Street Journal. We are going to be a big media company. Personally, I have a goal of creating 1,000 jobs.
Favorite Startup Besides Your Own?
Reddit. Because the community is amazing and they haven't need to touch the design in years.
People in the startup world that you admire the most?
Henry Blodget, Founder of Business Insiders. He's pretty vicious & I like that. Also Bryan Goldberg, founder of Bleacher Report & Bustle.com. He's a loose cannon.
What are you most excited for in 2016?
Hustle Con on May 13. We call it a less douchey version of a TED talk. We're going to have the well dressed founder of Mens Wearhouse chat with the founder of Chubbies, the men's short shorts.
You have 70k email subscribers in 5 months. Any distro tips?
All employees read a book on copywriting. It's important because it teaches you how humans think. You can use that knowledge to build anything. Also, be loud and shamelessly self-promote
Anything you'd like to add?
I've been working so hard that I forgot to shower for 3 days. Check out The Hustle: http://thehustle.co/ and Hustle Con: http://hustlecon.com/
