To my precious students,
I hope you had a great summer. I hope you got some well-needed rest, a break from the pressure of homework and grades, and a chance to do some fun things. Those times are important for self-care. I want you to know that taking care of your physical and emotional needs is always appropriate.
As you get ready for a new school year and new challenges, I pray courage for you. I pray that you will face each new day with your head high and your heart determined to do your very best no matter what comes your way.
There will be times you don’t feel courageous. There might be times when you are terrified of a new situation. Courage isn’t a matter of not being scared, it is going ahead and trying even when you are frightened.
I pray peace for your heart and mind as you continue to grow and change physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. I know how chaotic life can get, especially at your age.
When you face those times, remember that it is okay to take a step back, close your eyes, and take a breath so you can find the peace inside you. When you can’t find it on your own, reach out to someone who can help you. Many times other people can see it when you can’t. Trust them.
Please don’t be afraid to reach out when you feel weak. Sometimes all you need is someone to listen. You might feel like you are bothering people or that you are somehow flawed if you ask for help, but that isn’t true. Even the strongest people need help.
No one can make it completely on their own; people aren’t designed for that. You have people around you who are there for you, ready to hear you, whether you need advice, someone to get involved, or just someone who will listen. That’s a promise.
My door is always open and my room is will always be a haven, a safe place. Need to vent? I'll listen. Need to just sit quietly and decompress? I'll stay quiet. Need advice? If I don't know how to help, I probably know someone who does. I'll put you in touch.
And I always have chocolate for you. Sometimes all you need is a few minutes break and a little chocolate.
Above all, when you have a tough day, when you are weak, when you feel chaotic and lost, remember that you have a lot of people around you who are cheering for you. You will make it. You will thrive. I believe in you.
*** This is not only for the students who will be in my classes, but for those who have EVER been in my class. You will always be my kids. It is also for students on Commaful who live far away. If you need me, I'm here for you.
