Free verse for Day 27

I Thought I Saw You

by Profe Steve

I thought I saw you today

I thought I saw you today Walking along with your strawberry blonde hair

I thought I saw you today Walking along with your strawberry blonde hair Bouncing in time to the click-click of your heels

You didn’t know I was there.

You turned.

You turned. Looked right at me.

And my heart stopped.

For a second, just for a couple of heartbeats, You were there, a few feet away, a crooked smile on your face, Head cocked to the side just so.

Like you always did when you were amused. Or puzzled.

You were not a hallucination, a dream of your younger self.

You were not a hallucination, a dream of your younger self. I saw the lines on your face.

You were not a hallucination, a dream of your younger self. I saw the lines on your face. I saw the body of a woman, not a girl.

You were not a hallucination, a dream of your younger self. I saw the lines on your face. I saw the body of a woman, not a girl. Just like you would be.

You were not a hallucination, a dream of your younger self. I saw the lines on your face. I saw the body of a woman, not a girl. Just like you would be. Would have been.

If.

If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride.

You moved closer,

You moved closer, blue eyes intent on your errands.

You moved closer, blue eyes intent on your errands. I averted my eyes until the last second, then glanced up at your face.

You moved closer, blue eyes intent on your errands. I averted my eyes until the last second, then glanced up at your face. Suddenly you were gone,

You moved closer, blue eyes intent on your errands. I averted my eyes until the last second, then glanced up at your face. Suddenly you were gone, Replaced by a stranger.

A stranger who looked like you would have looked now.

If

If

I walked on.

I walked on. Trying to look casual, I strolled to a quiet place where I could be alone.

And wept

*** Prompted by something I read in a post by @bighomo about seeing someone from the past who wasn't really there. Something like this has actually happened to me. It was really freaky.
