Thomas's Failure

I was in shock as I stood inside the maze. I could feel dirt, grime, and leaves under my shoes, some sticking to my shoes as I ran over to Minho and Alby.

Night started to fall across the sky which twinkled with the oncoming sunset. It was very little light but I could still see Minho and Alby in the light that was there.

Minho pulled himself up--- was sweaty, dirty and scratched- up. Alby looked no better. His clothes were ripped and he was covered in cuts and bruises. I shuddered at the sight of them.

"Greenie," Minho said, "If you think that was brave comin' out here, listen up. You're as good as gone, just like us."

I could feel my face redden like a strawberry in the glisiling light.

"I couldn't just sit there and leave you guys out here."

"Ok? And what good are you with us?" Minho rolled his eyes. "Whatever, dude. shatter yourself, whatever."

"You're welcome. I was just trying to help." I felt really angry.

I cringed at the smell of tangy, sloppy blood that must have been coming from Minho or Alby.

It wavered through my nose and into my mouth which also made me have a sensation to puke. I ignored the bitter smell and focused on Alby. Alby looked at the edge of death.

His usually dark skin was losing color fast and his breathing was quick and shallow.

"Is he going to die?" I forced myself to keep my voice even and steady.

"Since we didn't make it back before sunset, probably. Could be dead in an hour---don't know how long it takes if you don't get the Serum. Though we'll be dead too.

Yep, we'll all be nice and gone soon." Minho said, darkly.

I felt my stomach begin to rot. "We're really going to die?" I asked, unable to accept that that was the real option. "You're telling me we have no chance?"

"None."

I ignored Minho's negativity and looked up at the sky. There was now a sunset setting over the glade and maze.

It was a gorgeous red, orange and gold color that looked like some kind of carnivorous plant if you looked close enough. I stared at it a while longer and looked over at Minho.

He was peering down the corridor that led deeper into the maze as if expecting Grievers to arrive. Minho then stood and grabbed Alby's arms and then nodded toward his feet.

"Grab those smelly things. We gotta carry him over to the Door. Give 'em one body that's easy to find in the morning."

I lifted Alby's feet and they half dragged, half carried him over to the Door, where Minho propped Alby up against the wall in a semi- sitting position.

I heard the rustling of vines against the stone wall as I fixed his arms onto his sides.

I could feel my heart pound faster in my chest as I heard that earth shattering roar of what only could be a Griever.

Minho folded his arms and leaned against the wall.

" Then why didn't it sting you then?" I asked.

Minho held his hands out. "Maybe it did prick me- maybe I'll collapse any second."

"They . . ." I began but trailed off. I didn't know how to finish because I couldn't tell if Minho had been serious.

"There was no they, just one we thought was dead. It went crazy and stung Alby and ran away." Minho looked back in the maze which was almost completely dark with nighttime.

" But I'm sure it and a whole bunch more will come finish us off with their needles."

"Needles?"

"Yeah, needles." He didn't elaborate, and his face said that he didn't plan to.

Me and Minho sat in silence for a few minutes before Minho talked.

"Oh man, oh man," he whispered, then crumpled to the ground, burying his face in his clenched fists, tears springing into his eyes. " I've never been this scared before, dude.

Not like this.

I wanted to say something, to tell him to get it together, to grow up, tell him to really think, tell me everything he knew. Do something!!

I opened my mouth to speak to close it when I heard that low haunting sound that wavered throughout the air.

A whirring sound that had a metallic ring every few several seconds, like knives rubbed against each other. It came from deeper and farther into the maze.

Along with that was the sound of chains clanging. It grew louder and then a sound or eerie clicks joined in along with a hollow moan that made my heart lurch with fear.

Minho stood , his face barely visible in the remaining dying light.

"We have to split up! It's only a chance of surviving the night. Keep moving. Don't stop moving!" And then he turned and ran into the maze, disappearing into the dangerous darkness.

Adrenaline floods my system, It pumps and beats like it's trying to escape. I think my heart will explode and my eyes wide with fear.

My body wants to either run fast for the safety of the hills or to help Alby. but instead I remained where I am. Let's face it, there is really only one thing I can do: Pray no one kills me.

I want to take one great leap off the pressure plate and run to safety.

My adrenaline surges so fast I almost vomit, I can taste saliva thickening in my throat and beads of sweat trickling down my brow.

I took one big gulp of air and ran an arm across my forehead, wiping away the sweat. I ran my arm against the wall Alby was leaning against. It felt smooth and rocky against my hands.

I wasn't even sure if I would survive the night in the maze.
