I sat at my desk in math class at Companionship High School. I was taking a math test. I combed my hand through my short, greasy, light, brown hair as my golden brown eyes scanned the page.
Urg, I hate math, I thought with a grumbled. And tests.
"THEN DON'T TAKE IT," a gruff yet slithery voice said.
This was the voice of Venom, an alien symbiote that had bonded with me over summer vacation.
Um, I kinda have to, V, I thought. I have to pass this class so I can eventually go to college someday.
"I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY YOU DO THIS 'SCHOOL' THING," Venom said.
I need an education, V, I thought. I have to in order to get a good job.
"WE ALREADY HAVE A JOB," Venom pointed out. "AND THAT'S FIGHTING CRIME AND PROTECTING THE INNOCENT."
That was true. The entire summer was spent fighting bad guys and protecting the people.
Even if they were afraid of us, I thought.
"Miss Scarlet," my teacher said, interrupting my reverie. "Are you done with your test yet?"
My head jerked up and looked at her.
Her face gave the impression that she was getting impatient.
"Uh, no ma'am," I said. "Just trying to remember what I studied."
She gave me a suspicious look but left me alone.
"YOU CHOSE THE WRONG ANSWER FOR THE SECOND QUESTION," Venom said after I had looked back down at my test.
No, I didn't, I protested. And how would you know the right answer?
"ZERO TO THE POWER OF ONE IS ZERO," Venom said.
No, zero to the power of any number is ALWAYS one, I thought. I learned that in fifth grade.
Suddenly the bell rang, signaling the start of lunch.
"Finally," I sighed, handing in my hurridly completed test. "I'm hungry."
"YOU'RE HUNGRY?" Venom said. "I DIDN'T EVEN GET BREAKFAST! I'M STARVING."
