Rain pattered on the stones and battle cries hung in the air. Opalkit huddled in the nursery, frightened. Crescentkit whimpered beside him. Both were scared and terrified. Outside, SpruceClan was at war. A group of rogue cats had intruded on their territory and were threatening to kill. Neonglow had already been killed, and the clan was still in a stage of grief.
Shivering, Opalkit pushed himself closer to his sister. He ran his paw down a scar on her side. It was what made her unique, what made her his sister. Crescentkit was beginning to fall asleep. Opalkit wanted to do the same, but he couldn't think about anything except for his mother, who was fighting the battle outside. Gradually the cries of war and pain died down, and the cats returned to camp.
Opalkit immediately went to find his mother. He gasped when he spotted her. Coralreef was limping, and had a nasty gash on her neck. Opalkit began to cry. "Will she be okay?"he asked Thrift, the medicine cat. "I will do my best."was all the she-cat would say. Opalkit cried back to the nursery. After telling Crescentkit the news, they both huddled in a pile,
whimpering. -Please let her be okay- thought Opalkit, begging to StarClan -Please let her be fine- Opalkit couln't sleep that night. He tossed and turned in his nest, worrying about his mother. When he did manage to nod off, his dreams were dark and haunting. The next morning, he dashed out of his nest and into the medicine den.
"Is she okay?" he asked, his heart pounding. "I'm sorry, Opalkit." Thrift said sympathetically. "She hunts with StarClan now." Opalkit couldn't believe it. "Why?" he cried. "She didn't do anything wrong. She didn't deserve to die!" Opalkit was so sad that he didn't notice that the world still existed until it was time to sit vigil for Coralreef. After that, Opalkit confronted his father, Freetail,
and asked him who killed his mother. "She was a large grey tabby,"was the response. "She had a nick in one ear, and very vicious kit called Night, a black she-cat." Opalkit had nodded sadly and walked to the nursery, thinking of ways her could honor his mother. It went like this for hours until it hit him. He didn't have to honor his mother; although he should, he
needed to avenge his mother. One day he would get revenge on the cat who had killed Coralreef.
