Do I matter?

Asteroids

The stars mock and outshine me.

In space, only I can hear my screams.

I lay adrift a valley of unkempt dreams;

I lay adrift a valley of unkempt dreams; the universe smiles back as a million horizons slice into my sleep like a million papercuts.

That smile is an urn that contains the ashes of spilled hopes,

That smile is an urn that contains the ashes of spilled hopes, as if the expanse of the cosmic void is an endless inkwell of what I wanted.

I spiral into the dust of stars and nebulas and creation that yearn to no answer

I spiral into the dust of stars and nebulas and creation that yearn to no answer – all else is cold in an eternal clench of galaxy teeth.

It coils its milky, ghastly arms into my spherical sky,

It coils its milky, ghastly arms into my spherical sky, illuminating their dreams and leaving mine to a dawn that will never arrive.

I ponder for a moment that seems to stretch to the end of time.

I ponder for a moment that seems to stretch to the end of time. That moment shrills to a didactic hissing of unfathomable wisdom.

And listen.

I gaze upon the debris of time’s wars and tragedies that glitter and litter around me

I gaze upon the debris of time’s wars and tragedies that glitter and litter around me – I can almost hear their cries in the invisible howl of space.

It might sound like a music box that had rusted over millennia, yet it refuses to die.

To be broken and unloved but not dead

To be broken and unloved but not dead – are they afraid that death means to be forgotten?

No infinite wisdom of stardust knows the answer, yet the answer is in the music box.

Am I a galaxy too, and are these my stars?

Am I a galaxy too, and are these my stars? Do they itch like I do to be remembered, despite their extinguished memories?

Am I an asteroid or a shooting star?

Am I an asteroid or a shooting star? What is my destiny?

Are my dreams rusting without air?

(Aside) So, this is a bit soon and all I can say is that this might be the one piece I have had the most fun writing! I had planned it over a week and I am VERY happy about how the final result turned out!

I've wanted to do another space piece for a while and one with abstract imagery, and this is it. I hope some meaning is decipherable, as I did intend for there to be something a bit more grounded here that I think some of you might find relatable.

I hope you enjoyed this piece, and take care! :)
