"No one to hear"

The Glorious Voyage

By Shubhkarman Singh Sandhu

When he was young, When he was bold, When his teeth had not even grown. He set for a voyage. Neither across the seas, Nor across the lands. For it was ideas that he Wished to explore.

When he was older, When he was bolder. When people of his age fell in love. He met a soldier of thrice his age. He told him tales of wars he fought, Of valour courage and bravery. He passed down his strength to him.

When he was mature, When he had grown. When people of his age started to earn. He met a woman quite old. She was a maid and of different caste. She told him of the injustice she faced, The brutality, the curse and the abuse she had to hear. She passed down her suffering to him.

When he was alone, When he was weaker. When his limbs began to hurt. He met a saint of his age. He told him of god and karma and death, And the time before he was enlightened. He passed down his wisdom to him.

When he was frail, When he was unwell. When people of his age played with their grandchildren. He met a woman of half his age. A traveller she was. She told him of the lands she’d seen, The books she read, the people she met. She passed down her knowledge to him.

When he was old, When he was broke. When he was found outside the temple. His journey had ended. He wanted now to tell the tale, Share the experiences that he experienced. But there no one to hear.

When he was young, When he was bold, When his teeth had not even grown. He set for a voyage. Neither across the seas, Nor across the lands. For it was ideas that he Wished to explore.
