Once upon a time in an ocean far far away. There was a girl who would get up every single day and swim with the stingrays.
But on the day before this particular day, There had been a great storm. The water now calm the girl was eager to go swimming again.
But the ocean was different...
The stingray huffed in agreement as he met his longtime friend.
Odd shaped, inedible, things. They weren't life, they weren't anything. Thought the stingray. Cluttering HIS ocean he snarled.
For here, there and everywhere, they were surrounded by plastic bottles, bags, and wrappers...
oh my... Thought the girl.
The girl knew she had to do something. But what could she do? She was just one girl. It's not like she could clean the entire ocean by herself.
As she sat on the edge of her father's boat feeling sadness and despair.
"think quick!" her Father said as he threw a plastic drink bottle her way.
She took a swig of the water in the bottle and stared at the familiar object she had only just moments before swam by.
'There is nothing I can I do...'
Looking at her father, and it dawned on her that he had had just the same idea.
"We may not be able to clean the whole ocean, but we can start with our own beach". Her father pointed at the shoreline where rubbish cluttered and twisted among the seaweed and shells.
So that's what they did.
One by one they picked up the rubbish.
The started to get attention for their efforts.
At first, people rolled their eyes "what can just two people do" they murmured.
But one by one more and more people started to join the father and daughter duo.
Before too long the shoreline was clean.
The girl smiled at the efforts of the group. Perhaps she couldn't clean the entire ocean herself but she could start with her own beach.
She took a swig of her drink bottle that she reused instead of throwing it out after one use.
That's when she realised. One girl could make a difference.
