From the earliest civilizations, we've survived on a knowledge we've forgotten.

The Only Unimportant Water

*written for a vigil I spoke at for all the victims of climate change because I'm an angry environmental engineer

From the earliest civilizations

From the earliest civilizations Society survived on an understanding we must now relearn

We would not settle anywhere without water by our side

But now we've turned against the entity

But now we've turned against the entity and expect it to provide wherever we stay

and forgotten the source of our mantra "water is life"

Because water isn't just life.

It is a life force.

And it will take as much as it gives.

We have poisoned the streams with our greed

We have heated the ice caps with our arrogance

We have traded our humility for power.

We've placed our conquest's importance above all:

Coastlines, islands, lives destroyed by aggressive abundances

Wildfires, droughts, thirst encouraged by alarming absences

Our endeavors have forced a world that once calculated the placement of every drop

to catastrophically shift the balance of our life force

And with everything happening in the world

And with everything happening in the world It feels like the only unimportant water in existence

And with everything happening in the world It feels like the only unimportant water in existence Are the tears we shed for the innocent lives lost

And with everything happening in the world It feels like the only unimportant water in existence Are the tears we shed for the innocent lives lost That are denied as fuel for change
