Simple formatting tricks that can improve your story.

Stories only Commaful can tell

T A B L E O F C O N T E N T S

1. Copy-write 2. Background 3. Delivery 4. Final words

In this piece, we will see four (4) different examples of how a story could be formatted on the Commaful Medium.

First, you'll see the poem with a black background.

Then the same piece using a stock image.

After that, different slides also using stock images.

Then, we'll swap the stock images for painting done by an artist.

Finally, you'll see two different examples of text placing.

I know it sounds like a lot, but the poem remains the same and I'll show you small incremental changes that you can emulate

That way you'll be creating amazing stories in no time, and make tons of friends in the process.

Let's get started with the copy:

1. C O P Y - W R I T E

Consider working with the first draft.

You might find that the copy-write "edits itself" when other elements are introduced.

(A story may become more difficult to format when too much time is spent working on the text.)

Let's create a piece together:

E X A M P L E # 1

"I will make the heat about me As well as the cold I will claim the sunshine As well as the dawn I will drown you in my spit till you can no' longer breathe You will find there is nothing I'm not willing to kill."

2. B A C K G R O U N D

Let's try using a stock image as opposed to a black background

I will make the heat about me As well as the cold I will claim the sunshine As well as the dawn I will drown you in my spit till you can no' longer breathe You will find there is nothing I'm not willing to kill.

One thing that some directors in the film industry will argue is that "emotion" is the first variable that they evaluate when editing a scene. (paraphrasing)

Meaning: IF they have to choose a scene, they take the one that conveys the correct emotions. (at the cost of some loss in logic or sense.)

E X A M P L E # 2

Let's continue using stock images while playing with the delivery.

(This is about making use of the interactive aspect of the Commaful medium.)

I will make the heat about me As well as the cold.

I will claim the sunshine As well as the dawn

I will drown you in my spit till you canno' longer breathe

You will find there is nothing I'm not willing to kill.

We went from having the entire piece on one slide, to a four-slide work.

You can't completely control the speed at which someone clicks through a story,

But you can influence

But you can influence and direct the rhythm

But you can influence and direct the rhythm by making fuller use

But you can influence and direct the rhythm by making fuller use of the format.

Let's now switch away from stock images.

These pieces are part of what the artist calls: "Visual Emotionalism"

E X A M P L E # 3

I will make the heat about me

I will make the heat about me As well as the cold.

I will claim the sunshine

I will claim the sunshine As well as the dawn

I will drown you in my spit

I will drown you in my spit till you can no' longer breathe

You will find there is nothing

You will find there is nothing I'm not willing to kill.

It's possible you clicked through the story at a slower pace.

Maybe took some time to enjoy the background art?

3. D E L I V E R Y

A lot of emotions can be conveyed by the choices made from one slide to the next.

E X A M P L E # 4

I will make the

I will make the H

I will make the H E

I will make the H E A

I will make the H E A T

a b o u t m e

a s w e l l a s t h e c o l d

I w i l l c l a i m t h e s u n s h i n e

as well as the D A W N

I will drown you in my spit

until

until you

until you canno'

until you canno' longer

until you canno' longer breath

That last version of the piece can be controversial. It is certainly up to the writer to decide h o w and to what degree a technique is used.

For me, the format you saw would fall under the category of "trick" and not technique or tactic.

For example: It is not uncommon to see films that make different uses of violence, sensuality, etc.

Sometimes it is a necessary and even key element of the story, but other times it serves to create "spectacle"

This is all for each writer to decide and to learn as they go.

Let's take a look at what happens in this piece if the words are moved around:

until you cannot longer breath

until you cannot longer breath

Not a huge difference (but better?)

I will drown you in my spit

I will drown you in my spit

No difference (?)

Also, at the beginning, I used a little trick when the word: "Heat" was revelead letter by letter.

For the story or poem that I was trying to present that would have been a trick and not a tactic.

Also, the word: H E A T should probably come out in one single breath.

The reason we went into this particular subject is because the Commaful format is quite powerful when we use it "correctly"

But when handled with no discrimination it can be like wearing five belts around your waist.

We probably don't need that many (?)

Now comes the final version; the one I was eventually "happy" with.

It's by no means perfect, but it illustrates the point.

E X A M P L E # 4 (final version)

I will make

There is no right or wrong way of using Commaful.

However, mediums have a way of suggesting how they should be used.

I hope this piece will give you some ideas for the future.
