A child of abuse tells her story

Small Child

by rialilem

You’re young

You’re weak They take advantage of your childhood

But it's not your fault

They joke at your softness

They expect you to be tough You never learned how

But it's not your fault

They yell

They push They take advantage of your smallness

But it's not your fault

They tell you that you are worthless

They expect you to be more You never learned how

But it's not your fault

You’re scared

You’re collapsing They take advantage of tears

But it's not your fault

They tell you they love you

They expect you to love them back You never learned how

But it's not your fault

Small Child,

Someday you’ll learn

Your house

is not necessarily

Your home

Your relatives

are not necessarily

Your family

This is deeply touching. When parents pass their illness on to their children who pass it on to their children who pass it on to their children. Somewhere the chain has to break. You have broken the chain by breaking your silence. This was heartwrenching to read. It must have been even more so to write. But to live through an unimaginable horror. I salute your courage to survive and to speak out.
