Brenda was scared. That was a new thing. To her. To everyone else.
And by a new school, no less! The granite-and-brownstone building used to be a prison, the agent that drove her there said.
In Brenda’s opinion, it still was. Mentally. They caged off creativity and imagination. Horrible thing to do. Horrible.
Brenda turned around to see her best friend Grover the Cripple and her adoptive brother Percy the Idiot.
“You know my bloody name, or at least you would if you weren’t such a dim wit!” She practically screeched in mock annoyance, wheeling on Percy.
She felt even more self-conscious than usual of her out-of-place English accent.
“It was actually him this time!” Percy nudged Grover, a glint of amusement in his eyes at her reaction.
Brenda turned her glare on Grover. He grinned sheepishly in embarrassment.
“I’ve always wanted to do that.” He admitted, laughing, before grabbing her wrist and pulling her along, Percy trailing behind them.
“Where are we going?” She laughed nervously, recieving a punch in the shoulder from Percy as an answer.
But before he could move his hand away, Brenda bit down hard, grinning as he winced and grimaced.
Ahead of them,Grover abruptly stopped, and the two bumped into him.
“Uh-oh.” He breathed.
“How bad is it?” Brenda asked. “If it’s as bad as Percy smells right now, we’re in trouble.” She joked.
Percy laughed nervously. “No, but seriously.” He said. “How bad is it, Grover?”
That’s when the two realized that Grover was a lifeless heap in front of them, a snarling hellhound crouching over him.
It bit down hard on Brenda’s neck, and she joined Grover in the Underworld.
A sword appeared in Percy’s hand and he let his grief transform into anger as he hacked at the snarling creatures.
“Impressive.” Gaea admitted from behind him. He whirled around to see her.
“Who are you?” He asked.
“Hera.” The goddess lied. “I come with news of sacrifice. Your friends there are dead... unless you sacrifice yourself.”
Percy readily agreed as he braced himself for pain.
He did not brace himself for the agony of his soul being ripped from his body.
The moment he fell to the ground, he was claimed by Poseidon.
But he was dead.
That left Tyson alone once again.
The moment she fell to the ground, Brenda was claimed as the daughter of Nemesis.
But she was dead.
That left Haley all alone once again.
The moment he fell to the ground, Grover was crowned Lord of the Wild.
But he was dead.
That left Rachel alone to rule.
All because of one simple lie Gaea told.
