Mario Mario is one of the most iconic video game characters of all time, but some people may not know how he came about. Donkey Kong was the first game that Mario starred in.
But at the time, he wasn't named Mario. He was called Jumpman.
It wasn't until one year later that he was named Mario when Nintendo released Donkey Kong Junior.
In 1981, video games were primitive. When Nintendo was programming Donkey Kong, they couldn't make his arms move. To get his arms to move, they had to give him overalls.
They couldn't animate him with hair. That's why he wears a cap, and they couldn't give him a mouth. That's why he has a mustache.
In the original Donkey Kong, Mario was a carpenter. It wasn't until later that Nintendo decided to make him a plumber.
In 1982 or 1983, Mario got his own game. Mario Bros. This game first introduced us to Mario's brother Luigi.
Mario has been the hero in every video game he's been in, except one. In Donkey Kong Junior, he was the villain.
Mario has been around for 38 years and I don't see him leaving any time soon.
