A sad story.

You Were a Liar

I had come to visit you late at night.

3 a.m., to be exact.

It was so late— I should say, early— that I didn’t think they’d let me see you.

It was so late— I should say, early— that I didn’t think they’d let me see you. But to be honest, I didn’t care. I only had to get out of my house, that place packed tight with worry. To get some fresh air.

Soon I was sitting beside you.

Soon I was sitting beside you. You were asleep and seemed peaceful in a white hospital gown in a simple white hospital bed in a small white hospital room.

You stirred and your eyes fluttered open. I sat up.

We began to talk.

You were calm and optimistic, as always, but I could tell you were weakening.

You even cracked a few jokes.

You even cracked a few jokes. I was sad enough to smile at them.

You even cracked a few jokes. I was sad enough to smile at them. You seemed to see it in my eyes, and I could see yours cloud with concern.

You lifted a hand and set it on top of my hand. Your skin felt like paper.

Looking in my eye, you said,

Looking in my eye, you said, “I’ll be fine.”

Well,

Well, you were a liar,

Well, you were a liar, my friend.
