Friday, May 18, 2018. Prompt of the Day: Window

FYI: One explicit word is used.

They Closed Their Windows

He was an artist with the colors black and blue.

He was an artist with the colors black and blue. He painted them on her face,

He was an artist with the colors black and blue. He painted them on her face, with spite and hatred

He was an artist with the colors black and blue. He painted them on her face, with spite and hatred complimented by the red leaking from her torn lips.

Every hit

Every hit took a scream from her.

Every hit took a scream from her. Every choke

Every hit took a scream from her. Every choke took her voice from her.

Every drop of blood drawn,

Every drop of blood drawn, every cutting word,

Every drop of blood drawn, every cutting word, every morning

Every drop of blood drawn, every cutting word, every morning and every night,

Every drop of blood drawn, every cutting word, every morning and every night, took a piece of her soul.

But as she cried,

But as she cried, and the noises drifted

But as she cried, and the noises drifted out of the room, out of the house, and under the roofs of neighbors,

they closed their windows.

They fought to pretend

They fought to pretend that someone wasn’t in need of help.

And when the man held loud parties

And when the man held loud parties with friends singing and cheering into the night,

they were more than happy to call the cops.

Yet whenever he lost his temper

Yet whenever he lost his temper and the little girl screamed in sheer terror

they closed their fucking windows.

AUTHOR'S NOTE: Honestly, when I saw the "Window" was the prompt I couldn't think of writing anything else but this. Something very similar to this happened to me when I was a child. People closed their windows.

They pretended we weren't screaming and crying because we were being horrifically abused. But when we were having fun for once in our lives, and we were "too loud" about it, they would complain. We'd get in trouble. We'd get hurt even more. They wouldn't complain about that. They'd close their windows. It makes me so mad. I'll never forgive that.

If you leave a comment, know that I read them all, I just may not have time to respond. Thank you for reading, and of course, thank you for your time.
