For @storyland's April Write It! Prompt: Reunion.

Bloodshed for Peace (Fairytale Version)

There were two clans in this forest.

Resources dwindled from the growing population of both,

Resources dwindled from the growing population of both, the land squeezing out life too quickly,

Resources dwindled from the growing population of both, the land squeezing out life too quickly, the clans greedily breathing it in

Resources dwindled from the growing population of both, the land squeezing out life too quickly, the clans greedily breathing it in with no regards to their fate.

Then the river flowed more slowly,

Then the river flowed more slowly, rain became scarce,

Then the river flowed more slowly, rain became scarce, the tides lowered and lowered,

Then the river flowed more slowly, rain became scarce, the tides lowered and lowered, and drought hit the forest in a deathly wave.

It began as small scuffles,

It began as small scuffles, little fights dotting the forest

It began as small scuffles, little fights dotting the forest over a caught hare,

It began as small scuffles, little fights dotting the forest over a caught hare, a clear pool untainted by mud.

It began as small scuffles, little fights dotting the forest over a caught hare, a clear pool untainted by mud. Then it became groups grappling in the dirt,

It began as small scuffles, little fights dotting the forest over a caught hare, a clear pool untainted by mud. Then it became groups grappling in the dirt, and the injuries and deaths escalated

It began as small scuffles, little fights dotting the forest over a caught hare, a clear pool untainted by mud. Then it became groups grappling in the dirt, and the injuries and deaths escalated exponentially.

And then,

And then, the two clans lay on the brink of war,

And then, the two clans lay on the brink of war, the people clamoring for justice,

And then, the two clans lay on the brink of war, the people clamoring for justice, calling for bloodshed so that they could behold some extra food in their larders.

And so the two leaders met.

And so the two leaders met. They were good leaders,

And so the two leaders met. They were good leaders, but good leaders do not ensure good people.

They decided to hold off on the bloodshed,

They decided to hold off on the bloodshed, hoping that the forest could sustain both clans

They decided to hold off on the bloodshed, hoping that the forest could sustain both clans for another year.

In a year's time,

In a year's time, they would meet for a final confrontation on the battlefield

In a year's time, they would meet for a final confrontation on the battlefield to decide who will keep the forest in their hands,

In a year's time, they would meet for a final confrontation on the battlefield to decide who will keep the forest in their hands, and the other would leave to find salvation elsewhere.

So, both clans prepared,

So, both clans prepared, and both clans waited.

At last came the day,

At last came the day, the first day of a new year,

At last came the day, the first day of a new year, when the reunion was inevitable,

At last came the day, the first day of a new year, when the reunion was inevitable, and weary leaders had tried in hardworn vain

At last came the day, the first day of a new year, when the reunion was inevitable, and weary leaders had tried in hardworn vain to suppress still restless people,

At last came the day, the first day of a new year, when the reunion was inevitable, and weary leaders had tried in hardworn vain to suppress still restless people, still shouting for war.

Resources have dwindled further,

Resources have dwindled further, and there was no choice but to welcome death's redemption.

The two armies met on the battlefield,

The two armies met on the battlefield, bristling with apprehension and long-awaited anger,

The two armies met on the battlefield, bristling with apprehension and long-awaited anger, both sides believing the other is at fault

The two armies met on the battlefield, bristling with apprehension and long-awaited anger, both sides believing the other is at fault for the sluggish river that rarely overflowed its banks to soak the crops,

The two armies met on the battlefield, bristling with apprehension and long-awaited anger, both sides believing the other is at fault for the sluggish river that rarely overflowed its banks to soak the crops, for the trees that slowly withered away

The two armies met on the battlefield, bristling with apprehension and long-awaited anger, both sides believing the other is at fault for the sluggish river that rarely overflowed its banks to soak the crops, for the trees that slowly withered away under a sky that has long since weeped life.

And it was nightmarish.

And it was nightmarish. Blood ran in rivers as equally matched sides of soldiers with swords

And it was nightmarish. Blood ran in rivers as equally matched sides of soldiers with swords and ill farmers with pitchforks

And it was nightmarish. Blood ran in rivers as equally matched sides of soldiers with swords and ill farmers with pitchforks waging revenge on their failed harvest.

The river,

The river, without enough water to dilute the sickly color,

The river, without enough water to dilute the sickly color, flowed red with the mark of the fallen.

The leaders shouted for peace,

The leaders shouted for peace, for an end to the horrendous scene that played out in rules of death

The leaders shouted for peace, for an end to the horrendous scene that played out in rules of death and nothing more,

The leaders shouted for peace, for an end to the horrendous scene that played out in rules of death and nothing more, because soon there will be no one left for them to command.

When more soldiers on both sides collapsed,

When more soldiers on both sides collapsed, and there were few enough people left to once more regain order,

When more soldiers on both sides collapsed, and there were few enough people left to once more regain order, the battle halted in the terror of the landscape

When more soldiers on both sides collapsed, and there were few enough people left to once more regain order, the battle halted in the terror of the landscape that was painted before them

When more soldiers on both sides collapsed, and there were few enough people left to once more regain order, the battle halted in the terror of the landscape that was painted before them like a cursed image of guilt.

A truce was called,

A truce was called, and those who remained living surveyed the broken bodies of their brothers below their feet.

A truce was called, and those who remained living surveyed the broken bodies of their brothers below their feet. They looked at their enemies, and saw they did not look any different.

Same two eyes,

Same two eyes, two arms,

Same two eyes, two arms, upright body.

Same two eyes, two arms, upright body. Same heart.

The leaders saw the revelation,

The leaders saw the revelation, saw their pupils' eyes cleared from the fog of hate

The leaders saw the revelation, saw their pupils' eyes cleared from the fog of hate and starvation by the sky that opened up and rained sheets of water,

The leaders saw the revelation, saw their pupils' eyes cleared from the fog of hate and starvation by the sky that opened up and rained sheets of water, washing away the blood on the ground,

The leaders saw the revelation, saw their pupils' eyes cleared from the fog of hate and starvation by the sky that opened up and rained sheets of water, washing away the blood on the ground, flooding the river and reaping the flowers,

The leaders saw the revelation, saw their pupils' eyes cleared from the fog of hate and starvation by the sky that opened up and rained sheets of water, washing away the blood on the ground, flooding the river and reaping the flowers, as if even the heavens cried for lives lost,

The leaders saw the revelation, saw their pupils' eyes cleared from the fog of hate and starvation by the sky that opened up and rained sheets of water, washing away the blood on the ground, flooding the river and reaping the flowers, as if even the heavens cried for lives lost, but the lives lost for a reason well known.

Thus is the story that created the forest of one clan.
