A super short story, but I believe this has a valuable lesson :D. A retelling of a chinese story I've read.

𝐀𝐯𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐲: 𝐀 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲

Once upon a time,

Once upon a time, in an old land, there was a king.

Once upon a time, in an old land, there was a king. One day, the king decided to select an heir,

Once upon a time, in an old land, there was a king. One day, the king decided to select an heir, as he bore no children of his own.

He told his messengers to send flower seeds

He told his messengers to send flower seeds to every child in the land,

He told his messengers to send flower seeds to every child in the land, and to pass on the message:

He told his messengers to send flower seeds to every child in the land, and to pass on the message: "Whomever grows the brightest, largest,

He told his messengers to send flower seeds to every child in the land, and to pass on the message: "Whomever grows the brightest, largest, most beautiful flower

He told his messengers to send flower seeds to every child in the land, and to pass on the message: "Whomever grows the brightest, largest, most beautiful flower before the coming three moons

He told his messengers to send flower seeds to every child in the land, and to pass on the message: "Whomever grows the brightest, largest, most beautiful flower before the coming three moons shall become the next king."

The messengers spread out across the land,

The messengers spread out across the land, handing each child the message and the seeds.

The messengers spread out across the land, handing each child the message and the seeds. One such person is a small boy

The messengers spread out across the land, handing each child the message and the seeds. One such person is a small boy who lived on the outskirts of the kingdom.

Over the next few months,

Over the next few months, he carefully nurtured his seeds,

Over the next few months, he carefully nurtured his seeds, watering,

Over the next few months, he carefully nurtured his seeds, watering, waiting for the sunlight to pierce the clouds.

Over the next few months, he carefully nurtured his seeds, watering, waiting for the sunlight to pierce the clouds. Every day,

Over the next few months, he carefully nurtured his seeds, watering, waiting for the sunlight to pierce the clouds. Every day, he would wake at dawn to watch the dark soil.

But no matter how much care he gave it,

But no matter how much care he gave it, how painstakingly intricate his proceedings,

But no matter how much care he gave it, how painstakingly intricate his proceedings, the seeds did not even begin to sprout.

But no matter how much care he gave it, how painstakingly intricate his proceedings, the seeds did not even begin to sprout. He watered and bred the same empty soil

But no matter how much care he gave it, how painstakingly intricate his proceedings, the seeds did not even begin to sprout. He watered and bred the same empty soil day

But no matter how much care he gave it, how painstakingly intricate his proceedings, the seeds did not even begin to sprout. He watered and bred the same empty soil day after

But no matter how much care he gave it, how painstakingly intricate his proceedings, the seeds did not even begin to sprout. He watered and bred the same empty soil day after day.

Finally came the day of the bearing,

Finally came the day of the bearing, where every child shall bring their flowers to the palace,

Finally came the day of the bearing, where every child shall bring their flowers to the palace, and he decided that there was no way the emperor could have given him dead seeds.

"It must be I who is doing this wrong,"

"It must be I who is doing this wrong," he thought.

"It must be I who is doing this wrong," he thought. And so,

"It must be I who is doing this wrong," he thought. And so, picking up his empty pot,

"It must be I who is doing this wrong," he thought. And so, picking up his empty pot, he went to the palace.

When he got there,

When he got there, he was met with wave after wave of children

When he got there, he was met with wave after wave of children bearing bright, colorful flowers,

When he got there, he was met with wave after wave of children bearing bright, colorful flowers, healthy,

When he got there, he was met with wave after wave of children bearing bright, colorful flowers, healthy, scents wafting through the air.

He felt a rush of despair,

He felt a rush of despair, but kept walking,

He felt a rush of despair, but kept walking, past the blooming flowers.

The children were led into one long row,

The children were led into one long row, the young boy forced to the very end.

The children were led into one long row, the young boy forced to the very end. The emperor slowly walked in front of them,

The children were led into one long row, the young boy forced to the very end. The emperor slowly walked in front of them, silently studying every child and every flower.

His face showed no emotion, none at all.

Finally,

Finally, each child growing impatient in the line,

Finally, each child growing impatient in the line, he reached the young boy.

Finally, each child growing impatient in the line, he reached the young boy. Seeing what he held in his hands,

Finally, each child growing impatient in the line, he reached the young boy. Seeing what he held in his hands, the emperor said gently,

Finally, each child growing impatient in the line, he reached the young boy. Seeing what he held in his hands, the emperor said gently, "why do you bear an empty pot?"

The boy looked down in shame,

The boy looked down in shame, and quietly recounted his struggles in the past three moons,

The boy looked down in shame, and quietly recounted his struggles in the past three moons, the elaborate and useless effort.

After his story,

After his story, the emperor smiled,

After his story, the emperor smiled, and announced to all,

After his story, the emperor smiled, and announced to all, "we have our next heir."

The children chittered in confusion,

The children chittered in confusion, exclaiming in shock and sullen glares.

The emperor said,

The emperor said, to the guilty uproar,

The emperor said, to the guilty uproar, "I boiled every one of the seeds I handed to you.

The emperor said, to the guilty uproar, "I boiled every one of the seeds I handed to you. And a boiled seed,

The emperor said, to the guilty uproar, "I boiled every one of the seeds I handed to you. And a boiled seed, a dead seed,

The emperor said, to the guilty uproar, "I boiled every one of the seeds I handed to you. And a boiled seed, a dead seed, cannot bear a flower,

The emperor said, to the guilty uproar, "I boiled every one of the seeds I handed to you. And a boiled seed, a dead seed, cannot bear a flower, is that not true?"
