Seasons

The red haze of a dogwood thicket The gray glaze of ice A flood came in the fall With too much rain For the ground's asking price And you could skate from the door to the pond

The snow washed over the land one day And evident were tracks of men and mice I found blood and feathers And saw that snow Was a fool's paradise Less pure than the animals whose bones lie beyond

In the spring came the rain and sun and buds Cracking the mirror of winter's vice And secrets came floating To the surface of water With a living smell to entice We floated on the marsh, and the adventures it spawned
