daily prompt.

mornings

I wake up, find myself

laying among a tumble of sheets,

my head tucked in the crook of your neck.

I wake and press a kiss to you collarbone,

roll away from your warmth,

and stand, pulling on a giant sweatshirt over my pajamas.

I head into the kitchen, turn on the stove,

fill the kettle with water.

I cut the fruit and butter the toast

(I know exactly how you like everything,

you know the same things about me)

when I return, you mumble something,

lean up to press a soft, sleepy kiss against my temple,

and take the cup of tea I hold out to you.

the sunshine slants through

the space between the curtains,

painting a golden stripe across both of us.

and we talk, only half-coherent.

then

I wake up, find myself

laying among a tumble of sheets,

alone.

I turn off my alarm and head out to face the world.
