"But until then, don't worry. Be confident, be you!" I finish, with a huge smile and wonder why it's not genuine.

(No Need To) Panic - A Short Story By @miyawrites21

"God, why do I always gotta panic before I meet new people? It makes no sense." My friend sighs, a concerned, confused shimmer lying in his dark brown eyes. He runs his hand down his forehead to the back of his head in a frustrated move and stops there.

The question caught me off guard, especially hearing it coming from him and seeing him so insecure. He usually seems so strong, so tough and confident.

"That's normal," I start, in what I hope is a comforting voice, "you're just afraid of doing something wrong. But there's really no need."

"Except when you still feel your unease building up while you're with them. Then you're with the wrong people. But until then, don't worry. Be confident, be you!"

I finish, with a huge smile and wonder why it's not genuine.

I finish, with a huge smile and wonder why it's not genuine. Nevertheless, his slowly winding down frown and the small, barely visible smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth confirm that I successfully assured him.

When we separate, my vision instantaneously turns dark. Suddenly, I find it hard to breathe and my chest feels inconceivably tight, almost like the baggage of every single human being was placed on my ribs. I struggle to swallow the lump that formed in my throat and try to regain my composure.

I struggle to swallow the lump that formed in my throat and try to regain my composure. I'm damned.
