C O U R A G E O U S BY: Mike Mezz Part Three (a poetic narrative story)
PART THREE It's only a test
We managed to procure some chared sheets of steel And four old-time marine batteries from the wreckage It appears around 20 attackers were killed Our defensive measures were pure perfection
Bethany and I retired to our little cabin We decided to tie the knot several years before Not long after our nuptials, I left my job at NASA And became a Captain in the war to end all wars
She was an electrical engineer at the same agency She developed the systems on the same vessels carrying the wealthy The ones we couldn't afford but free for public officials But, tomorrow we are going to test fire our first missiles
We'll find out if we can use our makeshift technology For rockets to carry our people into space This excitement is mixed in with anxiety I suppose that neither of us would have it any other way
Bethany dozed off under the cooling ventilator system The temperature outside is damn near 125 But I toyed around with this remote landing mechanism I know I have checked the charging cell 10 or 11 times
I awoke with Bethany standing over me The sun was just starting to rise She smiled while she tabled a cup of Yaupon Leaf Coffee And she kissed the tiredness from my mind
"It's only test, honey." Bethany muttered in a soft tone "I know what will make you feel better, " she whispered "You do, huh? I said, leaving the coffee alone "You just need a reminder," Bethany whimpered
Outside the sun was still moving toward the horizon When someone started pounding on the door I didn't welcome this sudden interruption "Cap, It's Simon. Fuel leak all over the floor."
"I sealed it off, Cap. But I need the keys to the tank" "Ok, Simon. I'll be right out," I said cursing. " Rain check?" Bethany smiled, "Mister, you'd better leave that check blank." I stood from the chair, " honey, I'll even take you to the bank."
When Simon and I arrived in the hanger The spilled fuel was already cleaned up That is always one truely massive danger I unlocked the tank and hooked the fuel line to the pump
I added a new seal and opened the valve The fuel went through a pipe to the launching pad The tank filled and nothing is leaking now "Thanks Simon, that could've been real bad."
It's getting dark and time to start the countdown If this is successful we'll need to build four more I could feel the nervous tension throughout the compound This is the moment that we all worked so hard for
