This short story is based on Lawrence Kholberg’s Theory of moral development. It briefly describes a little girl named Macy who slowly learns through stages on how to be a good person. Being a good and moral person doesn’t just happen overnight. Our childhood and our experiences are what shape us. But it’s up to us to us on how we use those experiences to shape who we are. We live and we learn. I chose this topic because doing what’s right and treating others good is what’s most important to me in life. You can never ever go wrong being a good genuine person.

Macy’s Journey Through Moral Development. Based on Kholberg’s Theory By Mia M Helring

5 year old Macy has developed a habit of repeating bad words. Her mother installs a rule that whenever she says a bad word she gets 5 minutes of time out. Eventually Macy’s mother makes a reward system that for any day she does not say a bad word she will be awarded an extra half hour before bedtime to watch tv. In time, Macy stops the habit altogether.

Macy is now 10 years old and is in elementary school. Her parents and teachers teach her about kindness. She is kind to others to make and maintain good friendships. These friendships make her feel loved and accepted. Her kind and outgoing persona is socially accepted and is what makes others admire her.

Macy who is now 16 years old has gone through hurt herself and empathizes with others hurting. She develops a virtue to treat others the way she wants to be treated. It’s no longer about punishments or rewards in return. She now genuinely cares about others feelings and her conscience is in full drive. Doing wrong onto others tears her apart inside. Her morals come first.
