Diary of a Lonely Man - Part 16

...114

You know what?

I've had enough slice of life and philosophical stuff for now.

I wanna talk about something i do for fun.

Game corruptions.

So i learned about them by watching a stream called Vinesauce.

Well, i watched the youtube videos, not the live stream, but i digress.

Vinny, the main streamer, likes to mess around with game corruptions.

I just feel in love with it and with his videos. He's one of the bests.

Anyway, back then, to corrupt a game, you had a program, called a file corruptor.

Basically, what it did is get random addresses on a file and change their contents to random bytes.

In other words, corrupting it.

Vinny would do that with retro game ROMs such as NES and SNES games.

When i watched all the wacky shit that happened to him, i said to myself:

"Wow, i wanna do that too, it should be fun!"

...It wasn't that fun.

Well, when it worked, it was fun, but it seldom worked.

For 1 playable result, you would get lots and lots of unplayable ones.

And the only way to make up for it is to keep trying.

Of course, the videos were only the best moments.

Vinny himself said that it takes a long time to get results.

Even after corruption programs made specifically for game ROMs were made, it was still very inconsistent.

So, some time passed and a little program called RTC came around.

RTC stands for Real Time Corruptor.

And that's when things start to get fun.

You see, corrupting the ROM was inconsistent because the ROM is a finely tuned and crafted program meant to run on a specific hardware.

Messing with it can be very destructive.

However, RTC doesn't corrupt the ROM. Instead, it corrupts the game's memory, as in the RAM.

This, by itself, wouldn't really change much, since messing with RAM can be just as destructive.

The trick is in the name: Real Time Corruptor

It corrupts the game over time, and you can choose the intensity so it doesn't corrupt too much as to crash the game.

However, the RTC has a built in emulator with support for rewinding, which means that even if it does, you can go back before it did.

Plus, it has many ways of corrupting, instead of a single one on the old corruptors.

They're called "Engines"

The first and simplest is the Nightmare Engine. This one works just as the old corruptor:

Choose random addresses, assign random bytes.

It gives the most chaotic results, but also is the most instable of them.

The second is the Hellgenie Engine. It's similar to Nightmare.

However, instead of just assigning random bytes, it also freezes the addresses' value.

So it could have completely different results.

Also, you can clear the frozen addresses and let them be changed again, meaning you have more control over the corruption.

The third is the Distortion Engine. It's mostly useless.

It basically makes random addresses go back in time and change their value to a previous one.

Now, it sounds cool, but the effects are way too weak, even on high intensity values.

The fourth is the Freeze Engine. It's similar to Hellgenie.

The only difference is that it doesn't modify the values, only freezes them.

It's weaker than Nightmare or Hellgenie, but stronger than Distortion.

And certain games have some pretty unique results with it.

The fifth, and most interesting in my opinion, is the Pipe Engine.

What it does is to continually transfer values from one address to another.

This means that it generates very curious corruptions.

Also, just like with Hellgenie and Freeze, you can unload the pipes and have more control over them.

There is another one, called Vector Engine, but i suppose this one only works with 32-bit emulators.

So, yeah, there's quite a bit of variety here. But there's a bit of a trick to working with RCT.

The art of finding the "Sweet Spot".

You see, different platforms and games are coded differently, and as such, some are more resistant to corruptions, while others are more fragile.

This is without getting into account the Engine that you're using.

So for each combination of game and engine, there is a particular corruption speed setting that makes the game corrupt itself in an "orderly" manner.

Simply put, if you corrupt the game too fast, it quickly becomes unplayable or, on other cases, resets itself.

Yeah, you can rewind the game, but it's no fun if you have to rewind every 2 seconds.

But if you corrupt too slow, you won't notice the effects of the corruption.

So basically you're playing the game as it's meant to be played.

On the "Sweet Spot", however, the game corrupts itself visibly, but not too fast as to make it unplayable, meaning you get to interact with the corruption rather than just watch it.

Rule of thumb for this is that "simpler" games require less corruption, while more "complex" ones need more.

But that's something you have to learn for yourself.

And the results are amazing.

From simple graphical glitches, to complete pallete changes, to weird soundtrack, to counters getting messed up, to the level itself being remodeled, to your character getting glitched itself,

all in real time, constantly changing, like you're fleeing from the corruption, or trying to make sense out of madness.

Honestly, i find it a fun pastime.

It's not terribly hard to use, but it is to master.

I like to think you're playing the game while the console slowly melts itself.

Anyway, just wanted to share some of this stuff.

Maybe it was useful, or interesting to you.

So if it was, go check it out. It's free, and you can use your already downloaded ROMs on it.

Till next time i guess. I'll be out playing Super Corruptio Bros, if you know what i mean.

Today i hugged my sister.

Now, before you start feeling happy for me...

...Sigh.

I was doing my walk.

Today i went much later than usual, but i digress.

I thought of many topics to write here.

But i can't think about them if i don't talk about this now.

Id's being supressed by SuperEgo, but i need to let it loose now.

...When i came back from the walk, my sister was in the kitchen.

My brain was like "It was now or never.".

I asked her for something.

She asked what was it.

I asked for a hug.

She left out a grunt, and said "Fine" in a very disgruntled manner.

Then i hugged her while i faintly whispered "I'm sorry"

It was like...

It was like she didn't like it.

It was like my love was a bad thing for her.

Rejection.

Again.

I don't know if this was better or worse than being outright denied of a hug.

But it hurts.

It feels like my affection and love are useless things.

The only things i have to offer.

Useless.

I'm useless.

GOD IT HURTS!

WHY CANT SHE SEE HER BROTHER'S SORROWS

WHY CANT SHE SEE MY NEED

WHY CANT I BREAK THE WALL

WHY

WHY CANT SHE BE MERCIFUL FOR ONCE

WHY CANT SHE GIVE ME SOME AFFECTION

SHE DOES IT WITH HER FUCKING BOYFRIENDS!!!

WHY AM I NOT WORTHY

OF MY OWN SISTER

I KNOW SHE SAYS SHE WANTS TO BE LEFT ALONE

I KNOW SHE DOESN'T LIKE PHYSICAL CONTACT

BUT WHY CANT SHE BE GOOD TO ME

AT LEAST ONCE

I DESERVE IT DONT I

OR DO I NOT...

LOVE IS USELESS

NOBODY WANTS IT

NOBODY GIVES IT

MY HEART

STABBED

PIERCED

MAIMED

DESTROYED

AGAIN

WHY!!!

I HAD THE COURAGE

I HAD TO SURPASS MY SHYNESS

IS THIS THE REWARD?

MORE SUFFERING?

I DON'T DESERVE THIS

I DON'T WANT THIS ANYMORE

MY OWN FUCKING SISTER

DOESNT WANT TO BE HUGGED BY HIS BROTHER

IM USELESS TO HER

IM USELESS

I CANT HELP

ALL I AM IS A BURDEN

ALL I AM IS A WEIGHT

WHERE IS MY LOVE?

WHERE IS IT...

Where is it...

It's somewhere...

It's closer than you can imagine.

It will be yours tomorrow.

Always tomorrow.

Except when it will be today.

but otherwise, tommorow, my friend.

Things will be better tomorrow.

Your dreams will come true tomorrow.

Tomorrow.

One day away.

You did your best today.

MY BEST WASNT GOOD ENOUGH

But it was your best.

You couldn't have done better.

Maybe tomorrow you will be.

Never give up.

You will be rewarded for your patience.

Don't cry.

Not anymore.

You had your release.

You expressed it.

It will be better now.

You'll feel better soon.

Go to sleep my child.

Go to sleep.
