Sunflower Musings: “askal” is a local term for indigenous dogs in the Philippines. While they are highly regarded as companions and are a staple of the Filipino home, there are also many askals that are naturally stray dogs, or “tramps”.


What’s the cost of running wild? Of being born without wondering what it means to break free

What price do I have to pay to have no walls to keep me from climbing mountains Or ceilings to cover the skies...

There is no cage for me that they can call my comfort zone...

There are no chains that take hold of me, and make me conscious of what holds my breath away.

I don’t what I am, though they may say that I’m a mongrel. But that is what I’m about to find out...

There are those who long for collars and pet names. Those who will learn how to be loved by owners.

But I find no home, except wherever my feet may take me. I am given no name, except when I answer to those who call me. And this is how I will learn how to live.
