Walking through mud, flies and rain Furrowed brows wince at the pain

Foreign Intruders

Walking through mud, flies and rain

Furrowed brows wince at the pain

An eternities march down unused ruts

My friend, his wounds, flyblown, filled with pus

As his body fights off foreign intruders

This forest weeps as if fighting off our intrusion

How long has it been?

Maybe two weeks

Here, lie down, rest your aching bones

Boughs and trunk begin to groan

The weight of the forlorn sky above

Has felled a tree just ahead of us

A fevered rattle

My friend’s chest

I look in his eyes

His last breath left

The trees lean in,

as if to listen

to me whisper the words

I will miss him
